Devices older than Android 4.1 will no more be compatible with WhatsApp starting November 1st, 2021. Likewise iOS devices below iOS 10.
According to WhatsApp, it was about ten years ago Google released Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, it’s quite strange to still have some phones run below Android 4.0.4, the final version for Ice Cream Sandwich. WhatsApp will no longer support older devices.
WhatsApp assured that so long as users can upgrade to at least Google’s 2021 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, they will continue to gain access to the app for now.
For iOS devices, WhatsApp said that users who bought their iPhones before 2016, will no longer have access to the app from November. Thankfully, Apple makes it possible for its users to upgrade their iPhones to at least iOS 10. This means that iOS users who are eligible to be thrown off WhatsApp can upgrade before the deadline.
Here’s a list of every iPhone that can be upgraded to at least iOS 10: iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE (1st-gen), iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE (2nd-gen).
